NBC Sports Brings Back Legendary WVU Voice Jim Fagan Through AI for New NBA Era

NBC Sports is reviving a powerful piece of basketball and West Virginia history with the return of legendary announcer Jim Fagan—this time through artificial intelligence. As the network gears up to reclaim its NBA broadcast rights starting with the 2025-26 season, it has announced plans to digitally recreate Fagan’s iconic voice, introducing it to a new generation of fans.

Fagan, a proud West Virginia University alumnus, began his journey as a Mountaineer on the football field. He played tackle in the early 1960s after earning a football scholarship, returning from injury in 1963 to face teams like Navy and its Heisman-winning quarterback, Roger Staubach. Although illness ended his athletic career prematurely, Fagan graduated in 1967 with a degree in fine arts—a foundation that would fuel a decades-long broadcasting legacy.
