LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission is joining other initiatives across the state to fight food insecurity and support families in need by launching Operation Appreciation Food Giveaway.
The initial event will take place on May 27 at 11 a.m. at the commission’s office in Little Rock (906 Broadway).
With schools closing for the summer, this initiative is created in hopes of providing nutritious meals to families in need during a time where children will not receive the food they normally would during the school year.
“Summer should be a time of joy and growth for our children, not a time of hunger,” DuShun Scarbrough, the commission’s executive director, said. “Through Operation Appreciation, we’re not only providing food — we’re showing families that their community sees them, values them, and is committed to supporting them.”
The Arkansas MLK Jr. Commission joins local nonprofits, faith-based organizations, schools, and volunteers across the state ensuring that they deal with the food insecurity and discrepancies many families face.
Those wishing to receive food are encouraged to arrive early, as food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be volunteers available to assist with loading food items.
For more information on the food drive, reach out to Director Scarbrough at 888-290-KING or [email protected].
