Schnitzer Cares helps Umatilla County kids care

MISSION – On Thursday night students from several area high schools presented grant checks to a number of nonprofit groups as part of the Schnitzer Cares: Student Grantmaking Program.

The students from the five schools distributed $70,138. They focused on organizations that support individuals experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and addiction prevention and recovery services.

The program helps teach high school students the process of distributing grant money to nonprofits. Students choose community issues, evaluate applications and interview representatives while deciding which nonprofits to fund. The program donates a portion of the fund’s student grant money, in addition to what the students raise themselves.

“It is one thing to say that young people are our future, but it is quite another to empower them during their most formative years, so they are ready for that responsibility,” Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation President Jordan Schnitzer said. “This program invests not only in amazing nonprofits that do vital work every day, but in a rising generation of leaders who will see opportunities to make change and know what to do with them.”

A ceremony was held at the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute where the students, their advisors, and representatives from the local nonprofits gathered together to not only celebrate the students, but to also give the grant checks to the nonprofit agencies.
