LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Bread Basket of NEPA is a series of seven food pantries in Lackawanna County.
“We have a veterans pantry and a Latino pantry. Serving our most vulnerable is Door Dash, reaching people who do not have transportation,” Bread Basket of NEPA Board President Rosemary Bohenek said.
The non-profit recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Bread Basket of NEPA served more than 29,000 people last year.
“The need is great, and it’s increasing as the food prices go up. The need is getting greater throughout our county,” Bohenek said.
To keep feeding people in need, board members need to money to keep these shelves stocked. One way they are doing that is with this Sunday’s Bread Basket Bolt. It’s the second year for the event, which starts at the Olive Street Trailhead on the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail.
“It’s a 5K/10K and a walk, so people who want to walk can obviously walk. People who want to run the 5K or both, the 5K and 10K, lots of options. We’re really excited. The weather is supposed to be good, and the energy is supposed to be great, Bread Basket of NEPA Board Member Vanessa Vergnetti Thomas said.
“All proceeds will benefit individuals in Lackawanna County with food insufficiency,” Bohenek said.
The race is this Sunday. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. It costs between $20-$30 to sign up. Bread Basket of NEPA will also be accepting donations of non-perishable food items.
