TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Harvesters – The Community Food Network partnered with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the US Postal Service for the 33rd annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 10.
This drive was critical as the end of the school year approaches and families face the realities of summer hunger. This year in particular, there is a widening hunger gap as the number of people needing food assistance continues to rise and resources to fight hunger are decreasing due to cuts to federal nutrition programs.
According to a press release from Harvesters, branded Stamp Out Hunger bags were mailed to many Topeka area residents in the days before the food drive. The public filled up the bags with their favorite nonperishable food items and set them near the mailbox Saturday morning.
Local letter carriers picked up the food along their route and made sure it got to Harvesters to be distributed to Harvesters’ network of food pantries and kitchens. People also participated by filling any plastic or paper bag with food.
Harvesters is also encouraging financial donations to the Virtual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, as for every $1 you donate, Harvesters can provide two meals.
