ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank left its normal warehouse for the day and set up shop in the post office.
Saturday, May 10 was the Stamp Out Hunger Drive, where mail carriers across the country picked up and delivered donations for local food banks.
“It’s really an incredible food drive. You can see over time how that can really make a difference,” said Les Sinclair, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank communication manager. “The food comes in, it’s sorted then later and goes right back into our community.”
Stamp out Hunger is the largest national single-day food drive and Blue Ridge Area Food Bank said the day is a huge help to community members in need.
Sinclair said the mail carriers are central to the day, as the convenience makes it so those who are unable to drop off donations themselves normally, can.
“It starts with the National Association of Letter Carriers. They’re the ones that really put this on,” Sinclair said. “It’s them saying ‘hey we want to make a difference in our communities.’”
