Local organizations held a plant giveaway to boost food security on Buffalo’s East Side.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Local organization have teamed up once again this year to hold a plant giveaway to help the community grow their own food and build food security.
Fare Share WNY and Groundwork Market Garden held the fifth annual Plant Sale and Giveaway for Buffalo’s East Side families on Saturday. Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski also supported the event, helping to distribute free vegetable seedlings and connect families with resources for growing food at home.
Last year, over 2,000 seedlings were given away to over 700 people, representing an estimated 12,000 pounds of homegrown produce.
“Access to healthy, fresh food is critical for our community’s well-being,” said Mayda Pozantides, Executive Director of Fare Share WNY. “By putting plants directly into people’s hands, we are giving families the tools to grow their own food, build resilience, and reclaim food sovereignty right at home.”
This year’s event featured over 25 community partners, family-friendly activities, gardening resources, food, and music.
“With just a few plants, a household can grow dozens of pounds of fresh produce throughout the season,” said Anders Gunnersen, co-founder of Groundwork Market Garden. “It’s about creating impact that lasts long after the event is over.”
Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with local organizations offering free information on soil health, pest and disease management, cooking tips, and harvest storage. Fare Share WNY encourages families to come early to take full advantage of the seedlings, educational resources, and activities available.
