Sports roundup: Newport pulls ahead of PHS in baseball standings

Newport jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first two innings and held on for a 6-3 victory over Philomath Thursday.

Newport takes sole possession of first place in the Oregon West Conference with an 11-1 record with Philomath now in second at 10-2. Both teams have one series remaining next week — the Cubs to face Cascade and the Warriors going up against North Marion.

Newport took an early lead on a two-out solo home run by senior Boden Langeliers in the first inning. The Cubs added five runs in the second, an inning that included a two-run single by sophomore Collin Fierro and a one-run double by Langeliers.

In the fifth, Philomath senior Brady Russell hit a two-run home run to get something going for the Warriors. Sophomore Jacob Hernandez had opened the inning with a single prior to Russell’s shot to left field. Later in the inning, junior Rocco De La Rosa hit a one-run single with sophomore AJ Altishin scoring.

Both pitchers went the distance for their teams. Newport senior Ethan Bruns allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks with five strikeouts. Philomath junior Wylie Griffith allowed nine hits, six runs and three walks with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Hernandez went 3 for 3 for the Warriors (17-4-1). Newport (18-4) had four players with two hits apiece — Langeliers, Fierro, Bruns and sophomore Matt Colton.

Philomath will open the North Marion series at home Monday with the first pitch set for 5 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Stayton erupted for 10 runs in the fourth inning Thursday to pull away from Philomath for a 14-1 softball victory.

The Eagles led 4-0 going into the fourth inning when Philomath pushed a run across on a bases-loaded walk to get on the scoreboard. But Stayton took advantage of walks and errors along with timely hits to put together its big inning in the bottom half.

Junior Mackenzie Schacher allowed two hits and three walks with six strikeouts in five innings. Senior Kaylie Kohler and freshman Rylee Martin had singles for the Warriors. Sophomore Haley King and freshman Libby Kramer both saw time at pitcher.

Philomath (11-10, 5-7) will host Cascade at 5 p.m. Monday.
