Social gaming for kids every week at Baldwinsville Library

For many children, playing video games with friends is a highlight of their day. The Baldwinsville Public Library is offering a space for younger kids to enjoy gaming in a social setting. The library’s Video Game Club, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, provides a variety of gaming options, including a Nintendo Switch and a VR headset.

“It’s walk in, come play games, hang out, have fun,” said KC Verhage, a children’s librarian.

The club is a convenient meeting place for children to gather with friends from school or the community.

“They have their friends, either from the club that they’ve made, or friends from school or outside that all show up to meet because it is an easy place to get to in the area,” said Verhage.

The program offers a structured environment where kids can relax and enjoy extra screen time, especially for those whose parents are strict about gaming at home.

“Being able to come in some place with a structure and some expectations, and being able to, if they’re above a certain age, come in to sit, relax. Some kids come in to get extra screen time, because their parents are very strict on that, which isn’t a bad thing. But sometimes they want to socialize with other kids, but then they can play their game in the way they want while talking to them,” the representative said.

In today’s social climate, finding common interests can be challenging for children.

“It is hard to just go out and say hi to someone nowadays. Especially if you are not comfortable with it. So if you have someone with an interest already there with you, it is really helpful,” Verhage said.
