LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Letter carriers across the country will be collecting more than mail this weekend.
On Saturday, May 10th, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive returns for its 33rd year.
In Lubbock, donations from the one-day drive will go to the Salvation Army to help restock their nearly empty food pantry.
“Hope totes are crucial for our community,” said Erica Perry, Director of Social Services for the Salvation Army in Lubbock. “Someone is hungry, there is no screening process, we give them food.”
The food drive comes at a time when pantries are often low on supplies after the holiday giving season. Last year, the Lubbock area collected more than 20,000 pounds of food.
Volunteers will pick up donations from local post offices and begin preparing Hope Totes, boxes filled with shelf-stable items like pasta, rice, and beans.
“Something like this when our food pantry is almost empty is so helpful,” Perry said. “Soon as we get the food in, it goes right back out the door to those in need.”
Residents can participate by leaving non-perishable food donations in a bag by their mailboxes Saturday morning.
