Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive across the country. It’s a partnership between letter carriers and local food pantries. The Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) warehouse on Des Moines’ south side will be a busy place next week as hundreds of volunteers will be organizing donations from the weekend. DMARC says it serves about 75,000 Iowans each year but the need is especially great this time of year. “We are starting to head into that time of the year to when school is out and there are a lot of families who need a little bit of extra help, as school lunches and other supports start to tick down during the summer months,” said Blake Willadsen, DMARC marketing & communications manager. The most needed items are essentials such as peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables. “Quick grab on-the-go and easy to prepare a meal for these busy households with young kids in them,” Willadsen said. “You’re just leaving a bag of some nice grocery items at your doorstep. It’s going to help out some families here in the Des Moines metro area.” Last year, the organization received about 30,000 pounds of goods during the food drive. Donations are also accepted here.
