A Connecticut man accused of kidnapping and sexually abusing two young children more than 40 years ago has been arrested, officials said.
John Church, 60, of Canton, was taken into custody by Watertown police after a four-month investigation that began when officers were informed of allegations of sexual abuse against him dating back to the early 1980s.
According to police, the allegations were related to two incidents that took place over the summers of 1982 and 1983, when Church was a teenager. Both alleged victims were under the age of 6 at the time of the abuse, officials said.
Police did not release details about the investigation or how Church was arrested.
Church is being held on a $1.5 million bond and is expected to be arraigned at Waterbury Superior Court later on Friday.
He was charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping after the state attorney’s office in Waterbury determined that the statute of limitations for the sexual assault charges had expired, officials said.
In Connecticut, for certain crimes involving the sexual abuse, exploitation or assault of a minor, charges must be filed either within 30 years after the victim turns 18 or within five years after the victim reports the crime to police or a prosecutor, whichever comes first.
First-degree kidnapping has no statute of limitations under state law.
