SALT LAKE CITY — A tour bus carrying kids from Denver completely burned on the side of U.S. 191 Friday after experiencing a mechanical issue, police said.
Lt. Cam Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol confirmed that all 36 people on board evacuated safely before the bus caught fire. Roden later confirmed those occupants included seven or eight adults, and the rest were sixth graders.
He said the bus pulled over on the side of the highway at mile marker 101, roughly halfway between Moab and Monticello, at approximately 9:30 a.m.
“The bus indicated there was a mechanical issue so they pulled over and evacuated the bus,” Roden said. “Shortly after the bus caught fire and was fully engulfed.”
The bus was completely destroyed. Roden said a school district in the area was sending another bus to help the kids get to a junior high school in Grand County, while they waited for the tour bus company to send another bus.
Roden said the kids were in the area on a camping trip when the incident happened. He said the roadway was completely open at approximately 11:30 a.m. after being closed earlier, but it would close down again once crews were ready to move the burned bus.
