Fort Dorchester High Schoolers dazzle at yearly food festival

Though it’s more than half a year away, Charleston Wine + Food Festival is preparing for its next event, which will include students enrolled in a local high school’s culinary program.

“It is chaos, controlled chaos, in the kitchen for Charleston Wine + Food cause we’re prepping for thousands and thousands of people,” Fort Dorchester High School Advanced Culinary Instructor Chef Darrel Shepherd said.

The program has been involved with the festival for two years.

“The culinary students that we work with can sign up for shifts and work in our kitchens alongside the world-renowned chefs that we bring in for the festival,” CHSWF Talent Coordinator Angell Troxler said.

Students who have previously participated say the experience was one-of-a-kind.

“It’s been amazing,” Senior Ellis Parker said. “I got to work with a ‘Chopped’ champion at Charleston Wine + Food and that was amazing; I had no idea.”

Chef Shepherd said he has witnessed students realize their potential while working at CHSWF.

“[A student] said, ‘This is where I belong,’ and I knew at that moment that that probably is one of the greatest things that I have done in my career,” he said.

Charleston Wine + Food Festival is scheduled for March 2026.
