GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – This weekend you can help people in our communities who don’t have enough food to eat, and you barely have to leave your house.
It’s the postal service letter carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
At some point this week you should get a bag from your mail carrier. Simply fill it up (or another bag you have) and put it next to your mailbox by 9:30 Saturday morning.
Postal workers and volunteers will be collecting them throughout the day.
“You don’t have to go very far, just as far as your mailbox, just to help out the community. So fill a bag up put it by your mailbox and we’ll come and get it then it will go out to the community… You don’t have to go anywhere except outside and drop it off,” Jeremy Beck, food drive coordinator for the National Association of Letter Carriers, said.
Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in the country.
It’s been happening across the country for more than 30 years. In that time, Northeast Wisconsin has collected about 5 million pounds of food!
The donations go to food pantries like the Salvation Army, Manna for Life, and De Pere Christian Outreach, as well as other, smaller pantries.
You can donate any non-perishable food items, such as canned fruits, vegetables and pasta. Letter carriers would prefer you don’t donate food that’s in glass jars, because they can break easily when being transported.
“We want to make sure that things are not expired or half full or half empty, because we do come across that every once in a while. The healthier the better obviously. Just because people are in need doesn’t mean they don’t want to eat well,” Beck said.
If everyone fills just one bag with donations, it will have a big impact on our communities.
Just make sure you have your bags near your mailbox by 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10.
