LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – A community food drive will be coming to Lawton this Saturday on May 10. The name of the event is “Stamp Out Hunger.”
7News anchor Dave Hunter spoke with the Executive Director of the Lawton Food Bank, Mac Lechel about their upcoming food collection.
“It’s an annual food drive hosted by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the letter carriers will leave a bag or some information in your mailbox and our neighbors can put dry goods out by their mailbox that the letter carriers will pick up and bring back to the Post Office for their local pantry,” Lechel said. “So, we will be over at the Sheridan Post Office collecting donations that they bring back.”
Residents are encouraged to leave bags of non-perishable food items by their mailboxes on Saturday for letter carriers to collect along their routes. As far as what types of items can be donated, s be accepted:
“Um, so obviously anything that would have to be refrigerated. We don’t want to leave it outside,” Lechel said. “Also anything in a glass container that would break. If you’re providing anything like rice, it’s better to do it in the smaller bags that we can easily distribute to our families. I can give a family a 50-pound bag of rice, but they may not want that, but we can’t split it up here at the Food Bank so it’s better to do it in individual smaller size bags.”
Mac says it’s amazing being able to play a part in “Stamp Out Hunger Day” and to see the community rally around those in need.
“So, it’s just pretty exciting to see how much food is brought in just at the one Post Office,” Lechel said. “The other Post Office downtown is partnered with the Salvation Army so that’s where their food will go. And it’s just incredible to see the amount of food that comes in! It’s such a huge help, especially during the summer months when kids are home and families need just a little bit more to keep the kids going.”
