Anicira Pet Food Pantry sees increasing demand

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — Anicira Pet Food Pantry in Harrisonburg said it is meeting the growing demand for its services, but still needs volunteers to combat pet food insecurity.

Like many food pantries across the country, the pet food pantry operated by the nonprofit group Anicira is seeing a noticeable increase in demand. The pantry operates twice a month, providing pet owners with a one-month supply of food to help care for their animals. On average, the organization assists between 775 and 950 families each year.

Prior to each distribution, Anicira receives about 10,000 pounds of pet food. However, as demand grows, so does the need for community support.

“We have been seeing a continuous increase of that demand for people needing assistance, and we are happy that we have been fortunate to meet that demand,” said Dan Chavez, operations coordinator for Anicira.

Chavez added that the increased demand also highlights a growing need for volunteers to help keep the pantry running smoothly.

The next distribution is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Residents interested in receiving support from the pantry or volunteering can visit Anicira’s website for more information.
