Yumbii, a food truck turned eatery, will be featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on Food Network this Friday at 9 p.m. Buckhead resident Carson Young founded the Korean taco food truck in 2010, pioneering the city’s food truck scene. Additionally, he is reportedly the first deaf chef to be featured on the show.
“Filming DDD was great. Honestly, I was really nervous about my ability to communicate well since I’m the first deaf chef to be on the show,” says Young. “It’s completely unscripted, so I didn’t know what to expect. Guy was so easy to talk to, and we really connected. We bonded in the kitchen over our shared love for food and unique flavor.”
Young reads lips, so a translator was not needed on set. As for the dishes Guy Fieri tasted, the show and Young are tight-lipped. The episode will focus on Southeast standouts and feature multiple spots from the region. Yumbii is known for its Korean barbecue tacos, burritos, Philly cheesesteak, wings, and sesame fries. Young’s dining in Los Angeles inspired him to run the food truck in Atlanta.
“I worked in Midtown from 9 to 5, and it was so hard to get good food. We only had a cafeteria in the building, and I kept thinking that food needed to brought in,” said Young in a past interview with Eater. “Then I went on a trip to LA for the first time […] I was driving around and I saw all the trucks, and I ate off some of them and it just clicked that I wanted to do this.” Since then, Young has held pop-ups at Atlantic Station in partnership with Cafe at Pharr, opened a hotdog joint called YumDiggity at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market (now closed), and run catering through Yumbii.
The taco food truck now has three brick-and-mortar locations in Midtown, Toco Hills, and Moores Mill, and one food truck for events. Catch Young on Food Network this Friday when the new episode airs at 9 p.m.
