Texarkana participating in Stamp Out Hunger drive; donations to go to Harvest Regional Food Bank

TEXARKANA, Ark. (KSLA) – Over the next few days, people can expect to find empty bags inside their mailboxes as postal workers prepare for their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Leaders with the National Association of Letter Carriers are asking people to fill the bags with food and leave them by their mailbox. On Saturday, May 10, postal workers will gather the bags and distribute them to local food banks.

“But please be sure not to put glass in there because those will break in back of our trucks, but anything else that is nonperishable, like you see in our picture down here with cans and boxes and bags, that will be fine,” said Michael Purifoy, union president.

The National Association of Letter Carriers has sponsored this food drive for more than 30 years. Last year, officials say around 20,000 pounds of food was collected by the Texarkana union.

“This is very important for us. We know there are a lot of children and families that don’t have access to food or transportation to get meals, so we try to treat people the way we want to be treated,” said Brenda Blevins, a postal worker.

The food collected during the drive in the Texarkana area will be donated to the Harvest Regional Food Bank. Director, Camille Wrinkle, says this food drive comes at a critical time for the community.

“Those who struggle with hunger tend to struggle more in the summer when there is not access to as many school meals and afterschool feeding programs, so this is a time that we really push to try to make sure we can help those families all summer long,” Wrinkle said.

Officials say more than two billion pounds of food have been collected nationwide since the the Stamp Out Hunger food drive began in 1993.
