Newcastle news: Fan views on Anthony Gordon or Harvey Barnes

We asked for your views on who should start in the big remaining games for Newcastle – Anthony Gordon or Harvey Barnes?

In our totally unscientific poll earlier, 63% of you wanted Gordon to start, with only 12% selecting Barnes.

However, the remaining 25% of you suggested that both Barnes and Gordon should be tried together for the final Premier League games.

Dave: Anthony Gordon is our best wide attacker. He’s more dynamic than Barnes – there’s more to his game. However, the partnership between Barnes and Tino Livramento has been great recently. If I had to pick, I’d go with Gordon.

JD: Gordon and Barnes are both equally effective in terms of goals and assists. Barnes is great arriving with late runs and scoring spectacular solo goals. But Gordon occupies players more, which gives Alexander Isak space. It’s no coincidence that Isak has only scored one goal from open play since Gordon has been out of the side. For that reason alone, I’d like to see Gordon start, with Barnes coming on later.

Richard: One big problem with inverting wingers like Gordon is that they can be predictable. To counter this an overlapping full-back offers defenders a dilemma in who to cover – the full-back who can cross the ball or the wide player cutting into the half space for a curler in the far top corner? Gordon makes the defenders job easier because he never plays in the full back on the overlap. He always cuts into the half space even if it is the wrong option – often to the frustration of Hall or Livramento. Think of our second goal against Liverpool in the final – Barnes plays a lovely yet simple ball to Livramento who crosses it to Jacob Murphy. Easy! Gordon wouldn’t have done that and that’s my worry when he’s playing. Correct that issue in his game and he gets my vote.

Julie: Gordon to start for me. Much more creative. Isak’s goals have dropped off since he’s been missing. Gordon picks up more free-kicks with his electric play too. Barnes and Murphy to cover the right wing.
