Focus on kids’ safety in spring, summer

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – May is Safe Kids Month, just in time to keep kids safe as the weather warms up.

It’s important for parents to know this time of year is what’s called “summer trauma season” because injuries and deaths among children increase dramatically.

Safe Kids Worldwide, alongside our regional Safe Kids chapters, say we’re getting into an exciting time for families. We get outside more, go on vacations, get time away from school.

But four months, every May through August, account for 41% of deadly, unintentional injuries among children. These are injuries that happen at home, in the water, on a bicycle, in a vehicle.

During the summer trauma season last year, 25 states were above the national average for the rate of unintentional injuries that led to a child dying. Wisconsin was one of them.

Right now we want to spread awareness.

Safe Kids urges parents to follow along on Facebook.

Wednesday, for example, is Bike to School Day, so kids are reminded to wear a helmet and make eye contact with drivers.

Safe Kids says a million families lose a child to a preventable injury every year around the world. That’s one child per minute.

Talking to kids about safety in the water and getting them enrolled in swim classes are good ideas.

At home, install safety guards and post the Poison Control number where it’s easy to see.

These are just a few tips. Safe Kids has chapters in our area, including the Fox Valley, Green Bay, Marinette and Oconto.

You can find the Safe Kids Month worksheets and High 5 tips for safety on bicycles, in the car, in water, at home, and sleeping at the Safe Kids website.
