Addressing food scarcity, summer food program starts in June

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Once school is out for the summer, access to nutritious food can be scarce. Starting in June, the Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service (SFSP) will begin providing free meals to students under 18 years old.

“The summer food service program, it really replaces that access to nutrition for the children in our state,” said Mary Ann Liby, the SFSP coordinator for the Department of Education.

Idaho has hundreds of sponsors participating this summer, including the Boys and Girls Club of the Magic Valley, according to the Department of Education.

“Starting June 9 is when the program begins,” said Jake Brasil, director of the Boys and Girls Club Twin Falls Unit. “Here in Twin Falls, we have a few locations: first being the Frontier Park, which is located right across the street from the Boys and Girls Club. We’ll be serving lunch there from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.”

The organization also hands out snacks between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily. An additional food site has been added to further address community needs.

“We did add an extra location this year, the Harry Barry Park location, because we do realize that in these times, it’s more difficult to afford meals at home,” Brasil said. “We wanted to add another location to alleviate some of that stress on families.”

The club also provides opportunities like reading and recreational activities.

“Enrichment activities are what we call them,” Liby said. “It really just encompassing that whole eating healthy and being healthy and being active.”

If you live outside Twin Falls, The Department of Agriculture will launch its ‘Summer Meals for Kids site finder’ webpage to help you find a location near you.

“They can enter either their address, zip code or city that they live in and it pulls up the nearest summer site located in their community,” Liby said.

The site finder will be available on June 2, according to The Department of Education.
