Sports Editor Matt Daniels with a look at what’s going on around the area:
Travion Wilson and the rest of the Centennial boys’ track and field team will try to win the Twin City Meet on Tuesday evening.
Three reasons we love sports today
➜ 1. Big-time high school track and field meets on Tuesday afternoon and evening ramping up to the start of the IHSA postseason next week when girls’ sectional meets take place.
➜ 2. The Harold Jester Track inside Tommy Stewart Field on the Centennial campus will host the annual boys’ Twin City Meet featuring the host Chargers, Champaign Central, Academy High, Judah Christian, Urbana and Uni High. Field events start at 4 p.m., with running events at 5:15 p.m.
➜ 3. The Dwight B. Wilkey Sports Complex in Monticello will host the Illini Prairie Conference Meet for both boys’ and girls’ teams on Tuesday. Field events get going at noon before the running events get underway at 2 p.m.
Former Illini Michael Massey hit his first home run of the 2025 season on Sunday for the Kansas City Royals.
Numbers game: 34
career home runs former Illini Michael Massey has in his four-year MLB career with the Kansas City Royals. Three events I’m paying attention to
➜ 1. Bradley at Illinois baseball. The Illini (26-19) are trying to avoid their first four-game losing streak this season when they host the Braves (11-32) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Illinois Field in Champaign. Illinois beat Bradley 5-2 last Tuesday.
➜ 2. NCAA Columbus Regional. The Illini women’s golf team tees off in the second round Tuesday in a tie for sixth place. The top five teams after Wednesday’s final round advance to the NCAA Championships next week in Carlsbad, Calif.
➜ 3. Lewis & Clark or Lincoln Land at Parkland softball. After two days of rain, the Cobras (35-14) will host one of those two teams in the Region 24 tournament championship game at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Ask an AD
Three questions with Danville athletic director Gary Gritton:
➜ 1. My favorite sports team is … the Chicago Cubs.
➜ 2. Three coaches I’d like to have dinner with are … Joe Maddon, Bill Self and Ron Polk.
➜ 3. My biggest pet peeve is … the victim mindset. Blame others, blame the coach, blame the refs, blame your teammates and make excuses. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be an excuse-maker. Own it, accept responsibility and learn from it.
