Northwest Sports Update: Vikings softball win GNAC, Mariners stay hot and more

Mariners News

The red-hot Mariners won their eighth-straight series over the weekend. Seattle took two out of three against the Texas Rangers to fortify their lead in the division.

The M’s beat the Rangers 13-1 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday to secure the series. But the Rangers won 8-1 yesterday to snap the Mariners’ six-game win streak and avoid the sweep.

Cal Raleigh hit two home runs in Friday’s game and now leads the majors with 12 on the season. JP Crawford picked up four hits over the weekend to extend his hitting streak to 12 straight games. Seattle now trails only Detroit for the best record in the American League.

The M’s will continue their road trip tonight against the Athletics, who sit just two games behind in the AL West. Coverage for tonight’s series opener begins at 6:00 and first pitch is at 7:05 with Bryce Miller taking the mound.

Meanwhile, the Rangers’ rough weekend at the plate led to them firing their offensive coordinator yesterday. The team also hired former Mariners second baseman Bret Boone as their new hitting coach, who will look to turn around an offense that has scored the least runs of any team in the American League.

One of the Mariners key starting pitchers could soon make his season debut. George Kirby threw three strong innings for Triple-A Tacoma yesterday in his first rehab start since being shut down with right shoulder inflammation during spring training. The right-hander gave up one run on a solo homer, struck out four and walked none while tossing 42 pitches.

Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto says Kirby will only need two or three rehab starts before rejoining the major league rotation.

WWU Vikings Softball News

Western’s softball team is once again GNAC Tournament Champions.

Sophomore Paris Dellamaggiore delivered a pinch-hit, walk off single to give the Vikings an 8-7 win over Simon Frasier on Saturday for their second straight conference tournament title. Senior right fielder McKenna Crum was named tournament MVP to headline six all-tournament selections for the Vikings.

They’ve now won 13 straight games and 19 of their last 20 ahead of the NCAA softball tournament. The team earned the No. 4 seed in the West Region and will face 5th-seeded Concordia University Irvine at 2 pm on Thursday.

Sounders/Reign News

Danny Musovski scored a goal for the fourth consecutive game and the Sounders beat St. Louis City 4-1 on Saturday.  Seattle is unbeaten in its last four matches, including three wins, to move above the playoff line in the Western Conference. The Sounders have a plus-seven goal differential during that span. St. Louis City is now winless in seven consecutive games.

Meanwhile, the Reign edged the Kansas City Currents 1-0 on Saturday. They now improve to 3-2-2 on the season and are tied for seventh-place in the NWSL standings.

Storm News

The Storm are down another player for the upcoming season. The team announced that forward Katie Lou Samuelson will likely miss the entire season with an ACL tear. She suffered the injury during practice on Thursday.

Samuelson signed a one-year deal with the Storm in February. The former No. 4 overall pick out of UConn has averaged 6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game over her career. She’s now the third player on the Storm to miss the upcoming season with an ACL injury.
