Eleven students got the chance to develop their sewing skills during a Learn 2 Sew event hosted by the Wayne County Stitchers on April 26.
Tthe students ranged in age from 9 to 15, and they were assisted by nine Stitcher members. The cost for each student was $10, which included a kit to make a burrito pillowcase and a lined zippered pouch, according to an announcement.
Sewing machines, ironing boards and mats were provided by Stitcher members, while the kits were pre-cut and packaged before the event. Students were set up at sewing machines, choosing their kits from a table of pre-made options. Each station had printed sewing sheets for practice and instructions for each item.
Several sewing techniques were taught
Students began by practicing sewing on the printed sheets, without thread in the machines. Once they learned to sew a straight line, they progressed to sewing corners and curved lines. Members then threaded the sewing machines and inserted the bobbin thread. Students followed directions for the pillowcase, with members available for assistance, including trips to ironing stations to press seams.
The program aimed to teach basic sewing skills, including forward stitching and backstitching, as well as inserting a zipper in the pouch.
In addition to taking home their two projects, each student received a small sewing kit and a $10 Amazon gift card.
