The Howell and Reed City Mario Kart esport teams were beaten by Mason County Central High School’s team in the state competitions. These Spartans are in eighth place have ranked into what is known as the Elite Eight.
By these victories, state awards were given to Coach Timothy Danielson and Captain Hunter Kapala. They were all-state coach of the year and all-state player of the year.
“This incredible group of student athletes and coaches have proven to be the best of the best in Michigan,” said Ryan Cayce of the Michigan High School Esports League.
In their honor, a formal ceremony will be held on May 10 at Oakland University for them and for all award recipients. It is open to the public at no monetary charge.
Danielson expressed his surprise by all of this and recognized the Spartan team.
“Coach of the year honors are usually for coaches of three different game titles. MCC only plays Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers,” he said.
Kapala spoke for the team as well, saying, “a race care driver is only as good as his pit crew and teammates.”
The local Spartans will compete against Richmond Community High School, of whom is number one in the state, in the quarter finals on May 8.
