Letter carriers across Hawaiʻi will collect non-perishable food donations on Saturday, May 10, as part of the 33rd annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive—the nation’s largest single-day food collection effort.
The annual food drive, led by the National Association of Letter Carriers, supports food banks and pantries at a critical time of year when supplies are often low. Last year, Hawaiʻi letter carriers collected more than 879,000 pounds of food statewide.
To take part, place non-perishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before mail delivery on Saturday, May 10. Your letter carrier will collect the donations.
“As long as people put the food donations out, even if it’s after that date, our carriers will pick it,” said Tiffany Kahihikolo of the Kahului Post Office on Puʻunēnē Avenue. Post offices on Maui will arrange donations to go to the Maui Food Bank.
The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected more than 1.9 billion pounds of food nationwide since it began over three decades ago, including donations from Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands.
According to the Maui Food Bank, one in four keiki are at risk of going hungry—a 62% increase in the last decade.
The drive comes at a time when children may have reduced access to school meal programs during the summer, and food banks are stretched thin after the holiday season.
