Kids take the lead for Take Your Child to Work Day

Village Hall was a bit livelier last week as several local children participated in Take Your Child to Work Day, stepping into the shoes of grown-ups and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the Village operates.

The day kicked off with a tour of the Key Biscayne Police Department, followed by planting a tree at the Village Green and visiting the Fire Station.

Pictured while touring the Police station are: L to Right, front: Mia Alvaredo (Jennifer Rodero’s niece), Paloma Villavicencio (Rey Crucet’s granddaughter), Blake Krepp (Islander News’ Justo Rey granddaughter), Sebastian Garcia-Fuentes (Jessica Garcia’s son), and Sebastian Drouet (Jessica Drouet’s son), back: Lt Martin Santiago, Ozzie Calleros-Gauger (Jeremy Calleros-Gauger’s son), Officer Elizabeth Del Valle, Alana Jairam (Daren Jairam’s daughter), Anthony Garcia (Jessica Garcia’s son) Officer Robert La Court, and Officer Flavio Solano.

The highlight came when the kids took seats at the Village Council dais, playing the role of Mayor and Councilmembers while responding to fictional “resident” concerns, complete with a surprise visit from real Mayor Joe Rasco.

The day wrapped up with a pizza and ice cream lunch.

Take Your Child to Work Day began in 1993 to inspire career exploration by having children shadow parents or mentors. Originally focused on girls, it expanded in 2003 to include all children, and today it sparks curiosity and ambition across the country.

I want to commend Chief of Staff Jennifer Rodero, Community Engagement and Communications Manager Jessica S. Drouet, and the entire Village staff for a job well done — and for graciously allowing Blake to tag along.
