Central Cambria’s Dom Kuntz won the 1600-meter run in 4:32.52 finishing just ahead of teammate Ethan Haycisak, who was the runner-up in 4:37.04 at the Mountain Lion Classic at Mansion Park on Friday — putting a solid finish on a long week for the Red Devil senior.
“I think all of our legs are a little heavy,” Kuntz said. “This is our third meet of the week, but that mile felt pretty smooth. I just wanted to keep it controlled with three meets this week and the LHAC meet on Tuesday. I’m trying to use it as a tuneup, but I’m happy to come away with the win, because this is a big meet that I have come to throughout the years.”
Kuntz, who is often most focused on Central Cambria’s team doing well and the relays, said Haycisak pushing him makes him proud.
“It’s awesome,” Kuntz said. “He was strictly a swimmer up until early in his high school career, but he used to run 5Ks with me when we were in elementary school. I finally got him to come out for the team, so seeing his progression throughout the years makes me almost like a happy dad seeing him succeed.”
Kuntz won a second individual event a couple hours later when he ran a personal best 2:02.09 in the 800 to edge Central runner-up Jacob Heuston, who finished in 2:03.14.
But he may have been even happier to see Haycisak take home the 3200 run late in the meet with a dominant win in 9:46.85, more than 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Tyler Caron of Forest Hills.
Dante Novak of Tyrone had an excellent day both in relays and individually.
Novak won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 4.5 inches by shattering his previous best mark.
Novak started his day by helping the Tyrone boys edge United in the 3200 relay for first place after he held off a late push by United on the final lap, and the Golden Eagles, with Novak running as the leadoff, also claimed the 400 relay with a time of 44.43 seconds.
“I’m pretty happy, because I made PR in both (the long jump and 3200 relay),” Novak said. “I got it by about 6 inches in the long jump. I didn’t reach and got a good landing and jumped up, not out. I think by districts, I can add a couple inches to that.”
Novak wasn’t the only Tyrone individual winner.
Lady Eagles freshman Lola Woomer won the high jump at 5-2, clearing two inches more than she did winning the event at the Bellwood-Antis Invitational on Monday.
Tyrone’s backyard rival, Bellwood-Antis, also had some success on Friday.
B-A freshman Ella Cherry won the triple jump in a personal-best 36 feet, 10 inches.
“I figured out my steps and pushed forward,” Cherry said. “I have done the triple jump since eighth grade, so it’s been almost two years now. It’s feeling natural, and I know I can get better if I get my phases down the way they are supposed to be.”
Cherry also won the 200 dash, edging out Tyrone’s Sarah Chichester and Nicole Ramsey with a time of 26.92.
On the boys side, Blue Devil Jayce Quick won the discus with a throw of 147 feet, 3 inches. Quick capped off a great week in which he was named the outstanding thrower at the Bellwood-Antis Invitational on Monday.
“I have been feeling pretty good and working hard at practice and after practice,” Quick said. “I definitely had some things work in my favor, but I can tell my work is paying off. I’d like to try and get over 150 in the discus and get into the 50s in the shot.”
Juniata Valley senior Ella McCrum was pushed by Bedford’s Chloe May about a fourth of the way into the last lap in the 1600 run, but once May attempted to pass her, McCrum kicked it into another gear and then pulled away to win in 5:10.01.
McCrum also finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:21.9, but she did not compete in the 3200.
The Class 2A Outstanding Performer Awards in honor of Cindy Gutzwiller for the chapter of Blair County were presented to Bishop Guilfoyle Academy’s Hayden Settle and Jack Singer, Bellwood-Antis’ Avah Hassler and Holden Schreier, Central’s Lanee Berkhimer and Eli Muthler, Hollidaysburg’s Emily Clapper and Isaac Yarnell, Tyrone’s Kylee Nelson and Aiden Detwiler and Williamsburg’s Abbie James and Dayne Mock.
Meet notes: Bedford’s Rachel Weber won both the shot put and the discus. … Lewisburg set the meet record in the girls 400 relay with a time of 49.32. … A lightning delay halted the meet just after the girls 300 hurdles at 7:50 p.m. The meet picked back up at 9:12 p.m. with the boys 300 hurdles. … United won the boys team title by eight points over Central Cambria and Tyrone, which tied for runner-up. … The Lewisburg girls also won a title, 107-88.5, over runner-up Bellwood-Antis.
