The survey found that video games help veterans cope with stress, build relationships, and improve their well-being — both during and after their military service.
The Interactive Entertainment Association (ESA) has released a new survey of current and former military veterans, which found that 86% of those surveyed play video games to relieve stress and anxiety. 77% of respondents said video games have a positive impact on supporting socialization with other people, including gamers from civilian life. The survey was conducted with 64% of men and 36% of women.
According to ESA, the profile of a veteran gamer is as follows: a 37-year-old man with a higher education, full-time employment, married, with children and his own home, is an active military serviceman with 6 years of service and combat experience.
79% of veterans play with other people at least weekly. Most of the time, veterans play with non-military friends, siblings, children, and close family members.
According to 81% of respondents, military games helped them cope with difficulties and get through difficult times. For the majority of respondents, video games remain a source of entertainment — 86%, for 76% it is a method of relaxation, 73% play games to combat stress, 69% for escapism from the realities of life and only 59% indicated that they play to spend more time with loved ones.
The most popular game genres are: shooters, role-playing games, sports simulators, adventure games and fighting games. Consoles remain the most dominant platform for gaming — 74%. Surprisingly, personal computers and smartphones have almost equal shares — 63% and 62%, respectively. Another 18% of veterans play on portable platforms.
Previously, dev.ua spoke with a current Defense Forces serviceman under the pseudonym “Bear”, who told how, thanks to games, he improved his military skills and also planned operations against the Russian invaders.
It should be noted that veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Christian Zheregy, has opened his own game development studio to work on an interactive game about two sisters surviving a full-scale invasion. The studio’s priority is to attract developers with combat experience.
