The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers for their food pantry and tutoring programs

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Salvation army is looking for volunteers for their community food pantry and tutoring programs, and they’re hoping the community will answer their call.

Communications and Community Relations Coordinator Kathleen Sanders said this time of year, students are focused on exams and going home for the summer so their need for volunteers is greater than usual.

The food pantry is open Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and volunteers would be responsible for organizing donations and walking through the pantry with families who are there to collect food.

They also need help for their tutoring program for every subject. Tutors will help with homework and look at report cards with families to help students in the community improve.

“The students actually bring their homework each week, so it’s not one subject, it’s all subjects,” Sanderson said. “We hold them accountable, we make sure that they’re growing in all areas and we keep updated with their family.”

The number of hours someone can give is flexible, but the organization asks that people stay for at least a couple of hours to allow them to organize schedules accordingly.
