SPARTNABURG, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Spartanburg Police Department reports arresting a 17-year-old after he fired shots towards a group of children he believed were bullying his brother on Tuesday.
Police said the teen is charged with breach of peace and malicious injury to personal property.
Officers report responding to an apartment complex on Powell Mill Road around 7 p.m.
The suspect, when questioned, told them that he saw a group of kids bullying his brother outside. They would not stop when asked, so he fired two warning shots into the air as he said he felt “outnumbered,” police said.
Officers report the teenager then said he accidentally misfired while trying to put the gun back and hit a vehicle in the parking lot before he ran away and got rid of the weapon.
Police said a witness reported seeing a man wearing a ski mask pointing a gun towards the children and hearing a shot hit a building. Another witness heard around eight shots in the parking lot.
Officers report locating seven nine-millimeter casings in front of the building.
Police said the suspect was found with an empty magazine before he was arrested and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
