Power outages prompt health warnings on perishable food safety

With several areas in the Ohio Valley without power, health officials are reminding people to be cautious with their food.

According to Jefferson County Health Commissioner Andrew Henry, it is better to be cautious when considering which foods are safe to keep during a power outage. While he recommends getting rid of perishable foods, he said several condiments might be alright.

With many areas around the Ohio Valley going on 24 hours without power, Henry said there are some food groups to be wary of for spoilage.

“They’re at the point now where they want to consider throwing anything in their fridge away that’s in that high-risk category,” Henry said. “Generally, you’re looking at about four hours that your fridge can maintain a temperature for food such as eggs, poultry, meat, and dairy products.”

Henry also said that, for frozen foods, look for ice crystals on the food or for the freezer to be below 40 degrees. If neither of those are present, or it’s been longer than 48 hours, he recommends throwing the food away.
