Omaha bakery concerned over FDA’s potential ban of certain food dyes

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – From frosting to candy coating toppings, next time you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, you could see some changes.

The Food and Drug Administration is attempting to phase out petroleum based synthetic blue, red, yellow, green dyes in favor of natural options.

However, Debbie Kohlscheen with Cake Expressions in Bellevue said switching could mean more labor and more costs.

“People use beet juice,” Kolscheen said. “There are fruits you can cook down until it is a fine syrup,” She said. “It depends on how big your patch and bulk would need to be for that expense for that person.”

Petroleum based dyes are found in cereal, candy and snacks. Some research shows dyes can cause behavioral health issues, especially among children.

“We want to be careful what we’re feeding our kids and making sure they’re safe,” said Dr. Anne Mardis O’Keefe with Creighton University.

O’Keefe told First Alert 6 while removing dyes is a step in the right direction, making some snacks a natural color won’t entirely solve health problems.

“I think we’ve had this notion that a chemical is a scary thing always, but it’s not always a scary thing and things that are natural can be scary too,” O’Keefe said.

As for Debbie, she wouldn’t mind the extra work.

“We do have some customers currently whose children are allergic to certain dyes,” Kohlscheen said. “We have to be very careful when we have to make a cake for that person.”

The FDA is looking to get rid of synthetic artificial dyes by the end of next year.
