Volunteers pack 10,000 nutritious meals for Indy food banks

In Indiana alone, one million people, including one in five children, don’t know where they’ll get their next meal.

INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of volunteers rolled up their sleeves Tuesday for a very good cause.

They helped pack 10,000 nutritious meals for local food banks.

It’s all part of Bank of America’s Million Meal Movement.

“Million Meal Movement works with all of the food banks in the state, and we work with food pantries outside of those  networks,” said Nancy Hintz, the program’s executive director. “Our food packs stay within the community of where the meals are being packed and so today, these meals will be going to local pantries who are in need of these shelf-stable meals.”

And there is such a need for it. Organizers say in Indiana alone, one million people – including one in five children – don’t know where they’ll get their next meal.

According to the Million Meal Movement website, Food banks and food pantries are seeing more Hoosiers needing help than ever before, often including families with two working parents.
