GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – More than 450 Food Lion associates volunteered at the food bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina today.
Here at the Greenville location Food Lion staff were working hard bagging up carrots and turnips that will be distributed to people in need.
Officials at the food bank say food insecurity in the Greenville area has risen significantly, affecting more than 61,000 people, an increase of 9,300 from last year.
During today’s event, volunteers sorted over 21 thousand pounds of meals, which comes out to be 17.974 meals.
“One of our biggest things we have taken away from this is associates ask when the next event is.” Turner Thompson, Food Lion director of operations, Greenville area, says. “They want to show up for this. So many people are impacted by food insecurities and this hits home. A lot of us know people who are in a situation that needs food and have gone hungry. It just resonates with our customers and associates.”
Food Lion has been partnering with the food bank for over 30 years, with anything from monetary donations to holding events like this, packing up food to be distributed.
