Check Your Health- Summertime Food Safety: Prevent Foodborne Illnesses

Summertime is full of picnics, barbecues, and other fun outdoor activities. Warm weather means more fun days, but it also means there are more chances for germs to grow in our food. You can prevent foodborne illness from picnics and barbecues by following 4 simple steps:

  • Clean: Make sure to wash your hands and surfaces often. You should wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds after you touch food, use the bathroom, change diapers, and touch animals.
  • Separate: Separate raw meats from other foods. Use one cutting board for fresh produce and a different one for raw meats and seafood.
  • Cook: Cook food to the right temperature. Use a food thermometer to make sure food is fully cooked. The USDA website has a list of safe cooking temperatures.
  • Chill: Refrigerate foods quickly. Put food into the fridge or freezer within 2 hours after you buy it or cook it. Refrigerate perishable foods (food that goes bad quickly) within 1 hour if it is warmer than 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) outside.

Follow these food safety tips to help you stay safe this summer while enjoying food with friends and family.
