Be an apprentice for a day or learn historic recipes at Pinecrest Village summer camps


The camps are held in July and August and are open to ages ranging from 6 to 16.

MANITOWOC – Walk a day in the life of a kid at the turn of the 20th century.

Try your hand at old-fashioned recipes with historic cooking tools.

Apprentice with a blacksmith or a dressmaker.

These are just a few of the popular summer camp experiences offered at Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village.

Registration is open for the themed youth summer camps for various age groups. Fees vary by camp and advanced registration is required. Some scholarships are available.

Each day of camp will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Early drop-off or late pickup options are available as needed.

Here’s more about some of the camps offered.

Life as a Pioneer summer camp

The Life as a Pioneer summer camp will take place July 9-10 for kids ages 6-12. During this camp, kids can discover what daily life was like for kids at the turn of the 20th century, from household chores to school lessons and taking part in hands-on activities in historic trades.

In the Kitchen summer camp

The In the Kitchen summer camp will take place July 16 for kids ages 8-14. In the kitchens of the historic homes at Pinecrest Village, kids will make old-fashioned recipes and bring samples home for their families.

Makesmith summer camp

The Makesmith summer camp will take place July 17 for kids ages 10-16. Each participant will learn about trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry, dressmaking, cheesemaking and printing. They will also have the chance to try their hand at making their own projects.

Civil War summer camp

The Civil War summer camp will take place Aug. 5-6 for kids ages 6-12. Local Civil War-era stories will come to life during this two-day camp. The camp will consist of activities that relate to the American Civil War, both in battle and on the home front.
