Aunt of 5-year-old twin shooting victims allegedly kept kids in deplorable conditions

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) – Investigators in South Carolina made another arrest after a triple shooting that left a 5-year-old girl dead and her twin brother fighting for his life.

Stanci Joy Acoy, 32, is facing several charges after she was arrested Tuesday, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. She was designated as the guardian to six children, including 5-year-old twins Brite Shalom and Journey Acoy.

Brite was killed and Journey was hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting at a Greenville apartment complex last Friday evening that Sheriff Hobart Lewis called “a senseless act.” The charges Acoy faces are unrelated to the shooting, WHNS reports.

Deputies say Acoy was keeping the children in deplorable conditions that included one bed for six children and a loaded firearm within reach of the children, as well as more than 50 grams of crack cocaine, over 90 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the apartment.

She is facing the following charges:

  • 5 counts of unlawful conduct towards a child
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm
  • Trafficking cocaine
  • Possession with intent to distribute marijuana
  • Possession of a weapon during a violent crime

Acoy was denied bond, according to officials.

Officials report the other children were taken into emergency protective custody by the sheriff’s office and turned over to the Department of Social Services.

Community members held a prayer vigil Monday to honor the victims of the apartment shooting. In addition to the twins, an 18-year-old was hurt but is expected to make a full recovery.

Deputies say 31-year-old Shawnteza La Shay Sherman and a 16-year-old boy were both charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder in relation to the shooting. Sherman was denied bond during a hearing Saturday.

Another teenager was charged with a weapons-related offense, according to officials.
