SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Workers for the postal service are teaming up to gather food items for those in need right here at home.
The grocery store checkout can be a source of anxiety for some families.
“Well, when there’s high grocery prices, everybody feels it. It’s just that the people who are struggling feel it the worst,” said Letter Carrier and SD Food Drive Coordinator Eric Wicks.
The 30th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 10, is an easy way to help others who need a meal.
Eric Wicks is asking that you keep an eye out for a bag delivered in the mail in the coming days.
“And you’re going to take that bag and any other bag in your house. Put those by wherever you pick up your mail, whether that’s the box on your house, your apartment lobby, your centralized box unit, or your P.O. Box,” said Wicks.
In uncertain times, the request for food grows.
“Because the need is so great right now, and it’s only going to get greater, and the people that are struggling are not always the people that you would think of all the time, and might be your next door neighbor,” said Wicks.
Those at Feeding South Dakota are grateful that this food drive can help cover the difference in funding changes.
“We’re seeing a decrease in available food sources from that federal level. So, currently, this food just couldn’t come at a better time when we’re still seeing about a 20% increase in those who are in need of food at our mobile distributions,” said Feeding South Dakota Community Egagement Manager Jennifer Stensaas.
Food donated through Stamp Out Hunger goes specifically to two programs, one for those being discharged from medical care, and another for middle and high school students.
“We all need to look out for each other, and this is one way,” said Wicks.
Along with your food donations, you can also write a check. Just make it out to Feeding South Dakota.
