Seahawks News
The Seahawks have 11 new players after the dust settled from the NFL Draft. It was an eventful Friday for Seattle after taking offensive lineman Grey Zabel in the first round. Seattle picked South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori, Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo and Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the second and third rounds.
The 22-year-old Milroe comes with the potential of a future dual-threat QB for the Hawks, though he’ll likely start the season third in the depth chart behind Sam Darnold and Drew Lock. His 20 rushing touchdowns for Alabama last season ranked eighth in the FBS among all positions and set a single-season school record for a quarterback. Milroe is just the third quarterback that general manager John Schneider has drafted in 16 years.
The Seahawks also took a pair of offensive linemen in rounds six and seven, rounding out their effort to improve an o-line group that allowed the third-most sacks in the league last season.
The surplus of quarterbacks led the Seahawks to make a trade over the weekend. Seattle sent Sam Howell and a fifth-round pick in the draft to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for the Vikings’ fifth-rounder, which was 30 spots higher. The Seahawks traded for Howell last offseason, but he struggled badly in his one relief appearance for Geno Smith against the Packers.
Mariners News
The Mariners bested the Marlins over the weekend to win their sixth straight series. Seattle edged Miami 7-6 yesterday to take their second game of the series and move into sole possession of first place in the AL West. Logan Evans gave up two runs through five innings to earn a win in his starting debut. Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 10th home run and JP Crawford kept up his hot hitting with a homer of his own to help power the M’s offense. It came just after Saturday’s dominant 14-0 win over the Marlins.
Jorge Polanco picked up six hits in the series, including three home runs and 7 RBI, to help earn American League Player of the Week. But the weekend was hampered by news that ace Logan Gilbert will miss at least two weeks with a right elbow flexor strain. The All-Star left his start on Friday after three perfect innings because of right forearm tightness.
The Mariners will stay at home for their upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels, who have slid to last place in the division after a strong start to the season. Coverage for tomorrow’s opener begins at 5:30 on KPUG.
Cal Raleigh’s thunderous start to the season has him leading the league in dingers, but one of his former Mariners teammates is right there with him. Eugenio Suarez became the 19th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a single game over the weekend. He accomplished the feat in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 8-7 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
After the historic outing, Suarez is tied with Raleigh for the most home runs in the league with 10 apiece. Suarez was no stranger to going yard with Seattle, hitting 53 home runs in two seasons with the team before he was traded to Arizona in March 2023
Sounders/Reign News
It was a so-so weekend for Seattle soccer clubs. The Sounders played the Colorado Rapids to a 1-1 draw on Saturday. Danny Musovski scored a goal for the third consecutive game for Seattle, which is unbeaten in three straight matches. The Sounders now sit in 9th place in the Western Conference standings.
The Reign saw much of the same in their 1-1 draw to Bay FC. They now move into a three-way tie for seventh place in the National Women’s Soccer League standings.
