Gemini app coming soon to kids, parents can manage with Family Link

Google will soon let Family Link-supervised kids under the age of 13 access the Gemini app.

In an email to parents today, Google detailed the upcoming availability of Gemini. Use cases like homework help, asking questions, and creating stories are touted for this audience. Children will be able to access the Android, iOS, and web apps. Gemini can be set as the default assistant on Android.

The company continues to emphasize that “Gemini can make mistakes,” and wants parents to help their children “think critically about Gemini responses.” From the email: “Remind [your child] that Gemini isn’t human. Even though it sometimes talks like one, it can’t think for itself or feel emotions.” Additionally:

• Show [your child] how to double-check responses
• Let [your child] know not to enter sensitive or personal info in Gemini
• Our filters try to limit access to inappropriate content, but they’re not perfect. [Your child] may encounter content you don’t want them to see
• Google Assistant Parental Controls will remain in Family Link and will continue to apply to Google Assistant devices in the home but will not apply to Gemini

Parents can disable Gemini access via the Family Link app or website. “Gemini” will appear in the Controls tab alongside Google Play, YouTube, Google Chrome, Google Search, and Google Photos.

Google will “let you know when [your child] accesses Gemini for the first time.”
