Connecting Kids to Meals receives a Helping Hand

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Its mission is to ensure that no child goes hungry. And that mission has hit a bump in the road this year. A federal funding freeze led Connecting Kids to Meals to cut back on weekend meals.

Now, the organization is getting a Helping Hand from Yark Automotive and 13 Action News.

In January, Connecting Kids to Meals was in the process of scaling back its programs in response to the federal funding freeze.

“Just because the executive order was rescinded doesn’t mean that another one isn’t coming and we know that the program is under tremendous scrutiny, so for us, we’re looking at how do we begin to look at reeling in some of the expenses?” Connecting Kids to Meals CEO Wendi Huntley said.

On the chopping block is the weekend meals for kids. The organization is only able to proceed with programs that have pre-existing funding mechanisms. Like its federally supported weekday and summer meal services.

Many of those bags go with kids attached to Lucas County Children Services. And that is why Connecting Kids to Meals is relying on the support of our community.

13 Action News and the Yark Automotive Group are giving the non-profit a Helping Hand in the form of a check for $1,300.

“My heart just lept, we’re so excited about this and obviously to 13abc and Yark for the support, this gift amounts to 722 meals,” Huntley said.
