Communities in Schools is a national nonprofit in 29 states. Communities in Schools of Central Washington is the state’s newest branch, celebrating three years this year.
Maura Ruiz, Executive Director at CIS Central Washington, said while there may be ample resources in a community, those situations can be difficult for students and parents to navigate. That is why CIS has someone on the ground who is able to connect these resources with the schools and students that need them most.
At the beginning of the school year a CIS Coordinator will do a needs assessment talking to staff, students, families and parents to determine the highest needs in schools.
“We can operate in 10 categories,” said Ruiz. “Sometimes it’s basic needs, sometimes it’s mental health resources, behavioral supports, academics, and it is really customizable to fit the need of the school.”
The goal of CIS is to empower success to all students by removing barriers and keeping kids on a path to graduation through local resources.
According to Communities in Schools of Central Washington’s annual report, last year alone, CIS Advocates provided individualized support to 198 students, distributed over 26 thousand essential items, and facilitated 220 thousand dollars of in-kind donations.
CIS of Central Washington is now in eight districts in the state, with 17 staff members working in schools. The nonprofit also partners with 77 local organizations to connect students and families with life-changing resources and opportunities.
May 29, CIS of Central Washington is hosting a film premiere 6-8p.m.in Union Gap.
“We are just looking to create awareness about out work and what we do,” said Ruiz. The event is an invitation to those who would like to learn more about their work and feel compelled to begin a partnership to support them.
