CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – One student group at University of Virginia is turning leftover dining swipes into meals for their food insecure classmates.
UVA Food Pantry and UVA Dine hosted its “Swipe Drive” Thursday, helping students donate their unused dining hall funds.
Each donated swipe translates to a pound of food for a student in need.
Organizers said last fall’s swipe drive raised thousands of pounds of food for the pantry, and they are hoping for similar participation this year.
“We are able to give food directly to students. These swipes are directly helping UVA students. If you’re a student watching this, you’re helping your peers,” said Daniel McCain, UVA Food Pantry’s head of marketing. “And the impact is that your friends who may not be able to talk about food insecurity, may not feel comfortable talking about it will be able to have something to eat.”
Students were able to donate at three different on grounds dining halls or online until 11 p.m. Thursday.
