South Plains Food Bank asking community for help in time of struggle

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The South Plains Food Bank is facing a shortage of supply with an increasing demand.

The CEO of South Plains Food Bank, Dina Jeffries, says food banks across the country are facing similar struggles.

“Right now what we’re facing is really a perfect storm: we’ve got decreased federal funding, we have a decrease in food product being sent our way, and we have an increased need,” Jeffries said. “More people need our help more than ever before because they’re still a high grocery price in the stores and they are just having a hard time getting ends to meet.”

Jeffries believes food is something everyone should have access to, and should never be a struggle for anyone.

“Our families, our children, our veterans deserve to have food in their bellies and food on their table,” Jeffries said. “When we share a meal we share so much more than just the food on the table, we share human experiences.”

In addition to monetary donations, giving your time makes a huge difference in making sure people have food on the table.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our organization, what they do is they stretch the budget of our food bank,” Jeffries said. “When you’re recording over 45,000 volunteer hours in a year, that equates to over twenty full time employees.”

Jeffries says no matter the struggle, the South Plains Food Bank is here to serve you and your loved ones, one meal at a time.

“We will continue to fight the good fight,” Jeffries said. “I’m just very thankful that we live in a community that not only sees the need but they continue to support us and I know that will continue to happen.”
