RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) – The end of the school year is approaching. If you have students going to summer camp or school, it’s time to start preparing.
One thing Liz Morgan, a Nurse Practitioner with CVS Minute Clinic, says is really important to check off the list is a camp physical. This will make sure your child is healthy enough to attend camp. It includes checking of vital signs, vision, medical history, list of medications and more.
Morgan says it’s important your student gets this to reduce the risk of injury and make sure any medical conditions are controlled while they are away from home.
Teaching your students how to wash their hands properly with soap and water is another piece of advice Morgan shared.
“A good thing to do is to hum the happy birthday song twice in your head while you’re washing your hands. Hand sanitizer is great. However, thoroughly washing your hands with water and soap is really the best method. There are definitely a lot of germs when kids congregate, such as something like norovirus, which is a GI distress illness in which you can have diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration… and washing your hands, not sharing foods and drinks, things like that can really help to prevent illnesses,” Morgan said.
Other tips to prepare include making sure your child’s vaccines are up to date to prevent diseases like measles, and making sure to keep your children home if they have any COVID-19 symptoms or unidentified rashes to keep from spreading to other children.
