MARESA event to connect kids with nature

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A family-friendly Earth Day event is coming to Lakenenland Sculpture Park on Sunday.

MARESA is hosting its seventh Sharing Nature with Children event. There will be games, nature walks, seed planting and resources for the entire family. Among those resources are the Superior Watershed Partnership, the Marquette Food Co-Op, Partridge Creek Farms and the Moosewood Nature Center.

The day is designed to get kids back into nature. When it originally started, there were around 30 people present, now there are around 300 kids and families who come out to participate.

This year, there will be the “council of all beings”. Kids and parents can make masks of something other than a human being. They will then gather around the fire and speak to the humans as those beings.

Angela Miller-Porter, MARESA Great Start Collaborative Director, says this is a fun way to support the connection between kids and nature.

“There’s something called nature deficit disorder, and a lot of problems from anxiety and depression, obesity, lower creativity levels – all of these things are tied to less time playing outside,” Miller-Porter said. “So this is just to encourage that and to have fun with families and support that connection to our beautiful world.”

Sharing Nature with Children is on Sunday from noon to 3:00 p.m. at Lakenenland Sculpture Park.

There will be hot dogs and chips provided, but they ask that you bring your own reusable water bottle if possible.
