High Plains Food Bank launches ‘Fill the Gap’ fundraiser

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The High Plains Food Bank is launching the Fill the Gap campaign, a fundraiser aimed at raising $250,000.

This comes after a recent cancellation of 13 truckloads worth of food from the USDA. The cancellation caused a gap in supply for the food bank.

The food bank says the demand for food has soared higher than during the 2020 pandemic and the recession in the early 2000’s.

Donations to the Fill the Gap campaign will help support food purchases through the year.

“You know, $250,000 could be anywhere from five to eight truckloads that we can bring in because of that,” said Zack Wilson, executive director of the High Plains Food Bank. “And obviously, that’s not the full amount, but we’re hoping that we’ll have those resources come in to do it.”

Wilson and the staff of the High Plains Food Bank is staying positive during rough situations as this.

“We will keep going, and it may not be the timing that I would like to see, with a little bit more breathing room on some things, when it comes to inventory. We’ve got a great support system known as the Texas Panhandle.”

A lack of deliveries by the USDA trucks will not impact normal operations of the food bank because it still receives 23 percent of food through the Emergency Food Assistance Program, as well as donated and purchased food.
