Transgender athlete policy changes fail in Washington school sports

SPOKANE, Wash. – Two amendments considered by the Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association (WIAA) that would change how transgender athletes can participate in middle and high school sports failed, the association shared in a release on Monday.

The WIAA is the organization that oversees most school sports in Washington.

ML/HS #7 proposed limiting girls’ sports participation to biological females, garnering 31 votes for and 22 against.

Meanwhile, ML/HS #8 suggested creating separate athletic programs for boys, girls, and an open division for all students interested, receiving 13 votes for and 40 against as well.

Both amendments required a 60%-member support to pass.

The WIAA said that if the state law changes in the future the WIAA Executive Board holds the authority to revise policies if needed.
